ad-hoc-art-threat-of-chance-8.jpgThrough May, The Threat of Chance, featuring the work of Josh MacPhee, Billy Mode, Chris Stain and The Polaroid Kidd, will be on display at Ad Hoc Art (49 Bogart Street, Brooklyn). The gallery is built out into a railroad shanty town full of paintings, stencils, photographs and signs. A handful of photos are here, but you can’t fully appreciate it unless you explore it in person.

Sean Star Wars at Ad Hoc Art

adhocflyerforwebpage.jpg

On Friday night, Sean Star Wars opens his show of woodcuts at Ad Hoc Art.

The woodcuts depict an incredible collection of images spanning everything from Devilish Ice cream Cones to Pigs having sex fantasies with Hot dogs and the ongoing saga of Jimmy the Pope all printed on billboard paper replete with found imagery of Coke cans, beer bottles, and hamburgers. “I like to tell funny stories using funny pictures” says StarWars “I make a lot of woodcuts and print them over and over on the billboard paper, so no two are the same. It beats the hell out of editioning, if you ask me.”

Support Just Seeds Art Show Tonight

just-seeds-art-show.jpg

Tonight, Just Seeds and Visual Resistance are throwing a giant art show and sale to benefit Just Seeds transformation into an artist-owned cooperative. The show features work by over 30 artists including: Swoon, Chris Stain, Josh MacPhee, RB827, Christopher Cardinale, Michael De Feo, Kristine Virsis, Elbow-Toe, GoreB, Imminent Disaster, k.see, Nicolas Lampert, Meredith Stern, Cristy Road, Pete Yahnke and others. On top of that, work for sale starts at only $4. In case you didn’t know the whole story:

Justseeds was founded as a radical art distribution service by Josh MacPhee in 1997. In nearly 10 years of operations, Justseeds became a crucial resource for radical artists and activists throughout the US.

In December 2006, the company that was filling Justseeds’ online orders (including hosting the website, processing payments, and shipping products), unexpectedly went out of business, immediately shutting down its online store. On top of shutting down distribution, the fulfillment house owed Justseeds upwards of $10,000 (most of that money in turn was owed directly to artists and writers who sold items on the site).

Now, like the proverbial phoenix, Justseeds is rising: a national network of artists are banding together to create a self-managed cooperative that will help spread radical art around the world.

Gimme Head Opening at Ad Hoc Art

gimme-head-ad-hoc-art.jpg

On Friday night, we checked out the opening of Gimme Head at Ad Hoc Art in Bushwick. The theme was heads and artists brought them: animal heads, luchador heads, Jerry Orbach’s head (Rest in Peace), talking heads, smoking heads, sexy heads and smashed heads. A fun group show if we’ve ever seen one. The show is up through October 27 at 49 Bogart Street in Brooklyn.
