Williamsburg Gallery Features Photos of Vice

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Tomorrow afternoon, Vice Magazine adds a gallery to its empire, with the east coast opening of their 2008 Annual Photo Show. In addition to the work of contributing photographers, the show also offers prints for sale (some very cheap) and a shop full of Vice schwag, including free copies of the latest photo issue. Take a look tomorrow, from 3 to 7 PM at the gallery below the Vice NY office (99 North 10th St, between Berry and Wythe, Brooklyn). The show will be on view through August 31, after which the gallery becomes office space for more Vice minions. The full list of featured photographers is below.

Artist Chris Stain Cuts an Interesting Figure

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Street artist Chris Stain has been putting up work with SWOON lately, but we’ve been enjoying his work since our first sight in 1999. Gothamist asked Stain about his modus operandi and where he sees the future of street art. “Down the drain…I don’t really think about it. I just think about what kind of images I am going to do next and when I’m going to get the chance to work and put them up” The entire interview is over at Gothamist.

Police Union Defends Cop’s Attack on Cyclist

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Union head Patrick Lynch is defending NYPD officer Patrick Pogan, who assaulted a cyclist at Friday night’s Critical Mass bike ride, depite of all evidence indicating Pogan used unnecessary and excessive force take down a cyclist who posed no danger or threat, and then lied about it in a sworn account. NYPD insiders suggest charges against the cyclist will be dropped, and Pogan will be fired after just a few weeks as a boy in blue. (High school photo of Officer Patrick Pogan from NY Post)

Eric Elms Makes Some Art for Nike Sportswear

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

This evening, Brooklyn artist and designer Eric Elms will present an installation he created for Nike Sportswear. It’s not really clear what Elms has in store, though his recent solo show at Paris’ Colette could possibly hint at it. We’re just hoping that since the installation opens at the Nike iD Lab from 6 to 9 PM (255 Elizabeth Street, Manhattan), they’ll be giving away custom sneakers instead of cups of cheap wine. We can dream.

Bike Bullying Cop Stripped of Badge and Gun

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

According to the Daily News, Patrick Pogan, the 22 year-old officer who carried out Friday’s assault on a cyclist during Critical Mass, was stripped off his badge and gun, and is now assigned to desk duty pending an investigation. ANIMAL looks at the court documents and notes:

“Contrary to the video evidence and universal common sense, the cop (deponent) claimed—in a sworn statement—that Long swerved and then ran into him, “causing deponent to fall to the ground and causing deponent to suffer lacerations on deponent’s forearms” . However, as the clip demonstrates, that’s not the case and the attack was unprovoked.”

NYPD Officer Assaults Man Riding Bicycle

Monday, July 28th, 2008

A video camera caught a NYPD officer running and violently shoving a man off his bicycle onto the sidewalk in Times Square, during Friday night’s Critical Mass ride. After being assaulted by the police officer, “the cyclist in this video was arrested, held for 26 hours, and charged with attempted assault and resisting arrest.” That is some bullshit. [Gothamist]

Sometimes One Gold Sticker Isn’t Enough

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Speaking of streetwear, Bad Ass Mother Fucker Fi5e, aka Evan Roth, created an unauthorized “New Era” covered in dozens of shiny gold stickers to show everyone how super fresh the hat, and by association, the wearer is. The hat is super exclusive, limited to an edition of 20 and not for sale right now, making it perfect for all those suffering from lack of more conspicuous and exclusive head wear.

‘Fuck SoHo’

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Spelled out with misappropriated streetwear logos, these “Fuck SoHo” stickers caught our eye recently, in part because we sometimes think the same thing. But who hates SoHo enough to print up stickers? A lot of people, but besides the 100% completely genuine outrage from Secret Society, the Queens sneaker shop located six miles from SoHo, there’s no info about these anywhere.
