One Turtle, Two Turtle, Red Turtle, Dead Turtle

What first appeared to be a plastic bag was actually a turtle floating limply in the East River today. Its painted shell stood out brightly, likely tagged with red paint as part of fangsheng or the “release of life.” It’s a centuries old practice in which some Buddhists release animals into the wild to give their merit a boost. Unfortunately, freeing a freshwater turtle into the salty East River is a pretty good way to kill it.
