Michael Alan: Draw-a-thing

You would be right to call Michael Alan a prolific artist. He’s working hard to make his mark and when he’s not busy in his studio, he’s leading Draw-a-thon, a weekly figure drawing session. Unlike the staid model sessions of art schools everywhere, Michael and his crew of models, actors and musicians don’t just sit their like pieces of meat. They interact and perform for your drawing pleasure. For nine hours. This work ethic is a holdover from the days and long nights he painted New York City as the graffiti artist FADE. Though his studio art shares little style with his graffiti, it continues to challenge New Yorkers to escape the ordinary. Recently Michael took a minute to tell us about “Draw-a-thing,” his solo show opening tomorrow at McCaig & Welles Gallery in Williamsburg.

Where are the characters in your latest work, “Time Travelers” coming from?

hoar-michael-alan.jpgThey’re a critique and commentary on where art history has gone, and I’m not saying I have the answer. They’re inspired by art history and they’re questioning where we are now as an artistic culture. Where is Chelsea? What happened when Warhol came? Where did figurative stuff go? That’s what I’m thinking about.

They are definitely lost and confused about the current state of art, so they are creating their own space. You’ll see a Victorian woman mutilated and transformed with linear ideas from graffiti on top of it, in hopefully my own language. They’ll be in a place that’s not really familiar. They’re landing in a new dimension. That’s why they’re time travelers.

And people will help them find their space — curators and their audiences. Not really me. I’m just creating it. I can’t really tell you where it will end up.

Michael Alan’s “Draw-a-thing” opens Friday, February 1st at McCaig & Welles Gallery. 129 Roebling St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. On display through February 12th.
