Japanther in 3D - Dinosaur Death Dance

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

show-3d1.jpg

Williamsburg’s favorite noise-rock band Japanther (Ian Vanek and Matt Reily) unveils a new comedic rock-opera of unpredictable scale, repercussions, and decibel levels. Using a high-energy multi-media format - their “tool kit” integrates live music, dance, an interactive set, video projections plus an animatronic robot dinosaur - the band and their collaborators create a full-immersion theatrical concert experience that sports a a sharp political edge and an equally edgy heart.

What starts as a post-modern funeral becomes an uplifting and entertaining ceremony. The set, designed by conceptual artist Dan Graham, becomes a canvas for simultaneous stimuli: a large optical glass wall not unlike his “pavilions” is situated next to a circular band stage, a la the Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan, where Japanther works their musical magic. While Sonya Robbins and Layla Childs dance up a storm, an animatronic dinosaur narrator, designed and built by industrial artist Doyle, inhabited by the text and voice of peace-punk Penny Rimbaud (spoken word artist and the co-founder of anarchist punk band Crass) lies on his deathbed recanting his belief systems. Darkly humorous intersticial commercials advertise the sunny plight of the American Indian and advocate arresting those who feed the homeless. By daring the audience to laugh at sad truths, Japanther opens up a door to hope and makes it cool again.

Pharrell Can’t Skate

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

pharrell-cant-skate.jpgThe NY Times discovers that black kids skate. They name drop Ray Barbee, Kareem Campbell, Harold Hunter, and Stevie Williams but credit Skateboard P and Lupe Fiasco for skateboarding’s rise in popularity. “By infiltrating hip-hop music and urban fashion, the sport has found new popularity among a black demographic that traditionally regarded skating with apprehension, if not scorn.” (The shirt is from Plain Gravy.)

Last Rites Performed by Car

The Times ponders a new glass bus shelter’s “baptism by acid,” and Curbed notes that “Brooklyn vandals seem to be beating the Manhattan vandals in both nasty message and extent of damage.”

But with all their attention to destruction, isn’t it odd that neither has ever mentioned the driver who ran a red light, hit 5 pedestrians and DEMOLISHED one of the new shelters. Puts a few tags in perspective.

The All-Smoking Art Opening

The Guy Debord Show: Episode 4

Dan Levenson Presents
The All-Smoking Art Opening – Sponsored by Altria

I will never consider myself a nonsmoker because I always find smokers the most interesting people at the table. ~Michelle Pfeiffer

This special event will feature more than 100 smoking intellectuals and artistic types. Together we will peruse an exhibition of all-black artworks. If you missed out on Paris in the 1920s, this is your big chance, and maybe your last chance, as the coming ice age of mediocrity, blandness and uniformity descends permanently on New York’s cultural landscape.

Visitors are encouraged to wear dark-colored clothing and chic eyewear. Extra credit for carrying a book of poetry, philosophy or modernist literature. Super extra credit if this book is written in a language other than English. Super double extra credit if you and a friend can discuss this book in that language. The event will be broadcast live over the internet.

Free cigarettes will be available for smokers, provided courtesy of Altria Group. Non-smokers are grudgingly welcome, but stay out of our way.

When: 11:00pm – 12:30am, November 8th, 2007 (Broadcast begins at 11:30)

Where: New General Catalog, 140 Franklin Street, Greenpoint Brooklyn (Click HERE for MAP)

Chinatown Taxidermy Garbage Tour

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

350_ctgt_poster2-1.jpg

You’re invited on a FREE tour of the New York City Chinatown Garbage. Did you know you could make art out of dead animals? YES! I am going to show you how to collect dead animals from the garbage in Chinatown to make your own personal taxidermy! This is the first NYC CHINATOWN GARBAGE TAXIDERMY TOUR! You will learn how to dig in the garbage for dead animals. You can make art out of these animals. It’s really cool!. I’ve found everything from sharks to frogs to plain old unidentifiable crap. Sometimes I find nothing interesting, but that is what makes it fun. You never know! RSVP is appreciated but not required. RAIN OR SHINE.

DATE: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH, 2007

TIME: 9PM

MEET: THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF CANAL STREET AND LAFAYETTE STREET

ABOUT ME (YOUR GUIDE): My name is Nate Hill, a Brooklyn artist who makes new animals from dead animal parts. I sew together random animal parts to make a new animal that doesn’t really exist (see pic below). Many of the parts I have used over the years have come from Chinatown’s garbage.

WHAT TO WEAR: I suggest wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Long-sleeve shirts are also good to keep your arms clean. Also fully enclosed shoes are recommended.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS WILL BE PROVIDED: latex gloves, first aid kit, wet wipes, and antibacterial gel.

ARE WE GOING TO DIVE IN DUMPSTERS?: No sorry. We prefer not to get that dirty. We just dig our hands in trash containers.

DISTANCE: We’re not going to be walking far. The tour consists of my favorite spots that are just within a few blocks of each other.

HOW YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THE GUIDE: I will be holding an 8×11 sign that reads “CHINATOWN TOUR”.

WHAT TO BRING: You may want to bring a plastic bag if you want to take a souvenir with you. You may also want to bring a flashlight, though I’ve never used one. I search by “feel”.

DURATION OF THE TOUR: About 45 minutes.

TRAIN DIRECTIONS: Take any train to Canal street and walk to the meeting point.

DISCLAIMER: I cannot prevent you from injury on this tour. Rummage at your own risk. I have never been injured when digging my hands in fish crap, but the possibility is always there. SAFETY FIRST. Beware of sharp objects. It is very important that you are very careful and
move your hands slowly. Treat that box of dead fish like a lady.

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: After the tour is finished, I invite you to drinks at the bar Home Sweet Home (a taxidermy themed bar) located at 131 Chrystie St at Delancey street.

You may want to investigate other “rogue taxidermists” before coming to the tour. They can be found here.

See ya there!

Nate
