A Big Slap to the Clean Train Era

made-u-look-whole-train.jpg

After yesterday’s teaser photos of the Made U Look “Cash is King” whole train, we got a much better look to share. Although the photo is missing the ‘M’ and ‘A’ it’s probably the best around because the R line, which this was painted on, only runs a maximum of 8 cars per train. Because of this it’s likely the whole thing was painted in two parts: two cars with ‘MA’ and an 8 car whole train, with “DE U LOOK” and Mr. Monopoly.

Clocking in at 750 feet of painted steel, this is a major feat for the so-called clean train era and a possible record for biggest whole train painted in history. It’s just too bad that Darius McCollum, the metrophile arrested nearly two dozen times for joyriding subway cars and attempted theft of a locomotive, was too locked up to help move a couple subways cars so the Made U Look crew could paint a continuous piece.

All the collected photos of the piece are included after the jump.

  10. no big deal no real style to the letters more fill in then anything. props for doing it but its deffenatly not like back in the 70;s and 80’s when style ruled. the first time nah get out of here! fab 5 did whole trains both sides and the roof and they burned withe style and the had more going on then just some simple ttb silvers.

  12. yo bronx bob, i think you should take a look at Dondi’s legendary peices you might be suprised how simple they are. Just because it isn’t wild style doesn’t mean it’s inferior, just different. I think it takes real talent to make something simple look good, like these guys did here.

  13. If this were done in 1985, it would have been just another day in NYC but since it’s lock down 07, everyone has there thongs all bunched up in awe. Its alright at best but bold for this close circut era.

  14. Regardless of your aesthetic preference, you can’t ignore the difficulty of even pulling off a whole train in 2007.

  15. europe train painting is kids games, europe is forever trying to catch up…alot of stuff in europe is legal walls…

also, the UA whole train in the seventies both sides was the best, but I dont think that included the top, there were never pics published of the tops…

ahahah shut the fuck up it wouldnt be any day in 1985 this has been only done 3 times before in NYC Transit history. and of those 3 times a few were pourly documented. some the old ones were tight and had more colors but were smaller in size. 2, this aint 1985. 3. niggaz shitted on everyone.

  19. i agree, however the fab5 a wholetrain not (wholetrains) they didnt do bothsides nor the top of the train. and it was on the 5 line where each car is 50feet long each one of these cars was 75 do the math. lee said it was done in coney island but that story was fabricated. the fab5 whole train was done in 1977 it was called the “christmas train” ua never did a whole train.

the 1st ever whole train was done by CAINE ONE, ROGER, CHINO 174, DIME 139, DOC ONE, TAGE ONE, FLAME ONE, MAD 102 and SPIKE, SPEEDY. In the corona yard on the 7 line it was called “the freedom train” because it was done on the becentenial of out independance july 4th, 1976.

on Easter sunday in 1988 by GHOST, WANE, LACE, KKONE, VEN, REMOTE and ANT did it on a B Slant Ridge Cars. shorter than these cars. this was the longest whole train until this recent one. this took 3 attempts to finish. 1st try they didnt finish the train got pulled out, on christmas was their 2nd attempt which they ran outta paint and it was left unfinished. Later 357 crew came and dissed it anyways.

yall need to learn your history, the writter “JAPAN” was rummored to have done a whole train in 1973 but it is only rumors and know documented evidence that it ever existed. WHOLE TRAINS have been done in europe by multiple crews and writters as well in Vancouver and other places in the united states in recent years. But not new york since 1988.

also if you guys read about the guys who did it u would know they wouldnt recieve and “mouth beat downs” from my knowledge through some internet research i have done on these “MADEULOOK” guys, they are some gang affiliated people from the united states not europe like some of u believe.

By word on January 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am
  20. and i take that back the B Slant Ridge cars are 75 feet as well so the 10 cars ties the 1988 wholetrain, however the freedom adn christmas trains are shorter in length by over 150 feet. if u do the square footage of the madeulook train is spans over a mile worth of paint.

Don’t talk about what you don’t know.
Most European kings have painted NYC subway, whereas there are not much US writers who have painted eurotrains.

    By frnk1978 on January 25th, 2007 at 4:47 am
  22. like i said style is king! dondi? what the fuck man dondi is style! i agree his “simple” styles which are not simple in any way. these so called kings of today can’t even mimick dondi’s so called “simple” styles.
not taken away what these brothers have done on this train. i agree it fuckin nice seeing a whole train done in this era.
okay okay im back pedaling here!

id have to admit ..after some cool down time and really looking at it from a non bias side (old school).
i defenatly rather see this than some shit bag get credit for using roller paint and spending a whole year on some wack letters for the sake of doing something huge on the side of a river bank..oops did i just say dat fuck ya!. all hail the style kings of da past.
“made u look” defenatly gets props and this is defenatly for the record books.

    new york unite!

By bronx bob on January 25th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
  23. In lieu of what BronxBob said from the pics on MULNYC it looks like they may have filled the white in with roller paint. Could be wrong but it does look like a roll. This was suggested to me by some other people initially. I disagreed at first , but with those new pics posted on MULNYC I can kind of see a possibilty in it..

Also “Word” you are incorrect R-40 slants are 60 ft long(10 cars x60ft)=600ft
R-44/46 are 75 feet long. These guy painted 10 cars over two set as each set is 8 cars. 910 cars x75ft)=750. That is 750 feet. A 750 ft set will over extend by two cars on an IND/BMT platform. You can see spec info on nycsubway.org

Your whole train info is very correct though. Actually all off your first post was correct.

This whole feat is amazing. The first whole car painted on a train in the MTA’s clean car program was done by Sane & Ven in 1989. The fact that 17 years later writers are still painting whole cars in the system let alone a whole train in a post 9-11 state is simply incredible. Goes to show if more writers would of been persistent enough back when the lines were methodically being clean one at a time….we probably still have graff on subways in NYC.

Get a job, get a clue and get outta the ghetto and contribute to society. You are NOT artists, you are useless gutter trash that the established society of this city cares nothing about.

@scottymta…hahahhaha…sorry but I bet you half the writers out there make more money , live in better homes then you do. Those who are really good and get up will always be remebered. Their are tons of books on the subject to prove it..as for kicking asses. Do a lil research on graffiti to see what the average age is. You find plenty of writers in there 30’s & 40’s. If anyone might receive an ass kicking it will be you.

You on the other hand have never been noticed, talked about or made a difference; which makes me think……..whose the real scum bag loser, us writers out there doing the doing or you sittin on your moms plastic wrapped couch eating Arby’s doing nothing to make any dent in society but girkin it..

On a side note, personally I make close 2 twice what you do in a year, and I don’t even know what you make…shit I’ll bet I make twice what you do in Canadian dollars

  50. great job…but i have to complain about something…why do u think that writting in europe its such an easy task? u should watch some movies from spain or poland for example and ull see real hardcore…the security is the same here…the difference is made by how many balls the writers have…from what i can see in us movies im really dissapointed…same styles as in the 70’s , real dirty(and im not talking about dirty in the good way) ,a lot of “kings” dont even know how to get a line straight and clean …. in europe if u paint a freight ure considered to be a toy (not that i agree with that) while in the us u think ure tough when u paint a freight and from what i can see is more easyer there…

( to give u an example on how the painting is done here - in one scene of an spanish movie those guys take the metro driver hostage while others from their crew paint a whole train…i dont really remember the name of the movie “bajo tierra” or “reality show” i think)
