Slick Rick & Kool DJ Red Alert

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Thursday, August 10, 2006
From 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Marcus Garvey Park

This is a Free Concert. All CityParks Concerts Start at 7:00PM and are Rain or Shine.

“Ricky D’s in control! Of what? The hip-hop scene…” So drawled the mighty Slick Rick on his 1989 debut The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. With his beret, his eye-patch and his mock-British accent, Slick Rick was like no one else in rap. Not only did he have beats from the Bomb Squad (the production team behind Public Enemy’s greatest hits), but he was a master storyteller and peerless rhymer, able to bring all sorts of surreal characters to life in his songs. Though various scrapes with the law prevented him from fully capitalizing on his initial success, Slick Rick is still one of the most distinctive voices in the realm of hip-hop.

One of the most famous DJ’s in rap history, Kool DJ Red Alert has been showcasing new hip-hop for over 20 years—in dance clubs, on mix-tapes, and perhaps most importantly on legendary radio shows for KISS-FM, Hot 97 and Power105.1. Known for playing only the music he likes, no matter how obscure, Red Alert helped launch of the careers of the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, joined KRS-One’s Boogie Down Productions, and earned a place in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.

Brower Park

http://www.cityparksfoundation.org/index1.aspx?BD=19207

This is a Free Concert. All CityParks Concerts Start at 7:00PM and are Rain or Shine.

The self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Entertainer,” Doug E Fresh is one of the legends of old school rap. Fresh virtually invented the “human beat box,” mimicking the sounds of drum machines and other instruments with amazing accuracy.

His 1985 single “The Show/La-Di-Da-Di” is considered one of the most important releases in rap history, and his follow-up album Oh My God! is an acknowledged hip-hop classic. Joining Doug E Fresh will be legendary DJ and mix-tap pioneer Brucie B., famed for his old-school blend of funk, disco and pure hip-hop.

Miss Rockaway Armada Art Auction

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

The Miss Rockaway Armada will host a benefit silent art auction in New York City called Send Our Hopes Down the River on the evening of July 13th, 2006 at 7pm at the Holasek-Weir Projects. The group is calling on artists and art enthusiasts for their support to send this scrap-raft flotilla down the Mississippi River in July and August. Funds are needed for motors, fuel, nautical equipment and transportation. The silent auction will feature work from dozens of artists, including:

Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Swoon, ESPO, Faile, The Barnstormers, Blek Le Rat, Logan Hicks, Chris Stain, Leon Reid (Darius Jones), Eine, Dennis Mcnett, Matthew Modine

The Armada project was conceived by street artist Swoon, and is now being built and organized by a collective of 25 artists, performers and activists from New York, San Francisco and Seattle. The Armada enjoys support from the Holasek-Weir Projects, the Wooster Collective and the Barnstormers art collective, who will donate a larger-than-life sound system sculpture that will float down the river. Send Our Hopes Down the River is presented in collaboration with Emergency Arts and Conjunction Arts, two organizations dedicated to promoting art with a social conscience.

The event will feature a life-sized pontoon raft-stage, a skeptics’ raffle, performances by members of the Miss Rockaway Armada crew, and some exciting surprises. Select items can be previewed on Wooster Collective preceding the benefit. Bidding ends promptly at 9pm.

The Miss Rockaway Armada includes members of the Toyshop Collective, Visual Resistance, The Amateurs, The Floating Neutrinos, The Infernal Noise Brigade, The Madagascar Institute and the Rude Mechanical Orchestra. This July they will converge in Minneapolis to construct a flotilla of rafts that will journey down the Mississippi River. The group is creating a mobile cultural center that embodies their search for creative and sustainable ways of living.

For information on this event and The Miss Rockaway Armada, contact A’yen Tran at (646) 232-4123, ayen@missrockaway.org. The Holasek-Weir Projects is located at 547 W. 21st near 11th Ave. in Chelsea.

Last Friday in Bed Stuy, muralist Victor Goldfeld finished a memorial mural to the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The mural, based off ODB’s first album cover for ‘Return to the 36 Chambers’ was commissioned by Raison G. Allah, his cousin who is also finishing a documentary on his life.

Recall that in 1998, Ol’ Dirty Bastard rescued a girl from a burning car.

Versus Mag SF #4

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Versus Magazine SF arrived in my mailbox the other day. Though San Francisco based, its 40 pages of black and white goodness pays attention to locals and out of towners alike. Features Distortion 2 Static, photographer Vito Fun, and Megabusive among others.

Plus, Serg One dodges diplomacy in “I Do Not Celebrate Streetwear.”

“It’s a bunch of privileged fucks trying to front like they on some shit when all they do is make shitty t-shirts. Same mother fuckers you see all up on the internet trying to front like they hard, throwing up some stupid ass fashion posse signs.”

“It’s not even on a hood level, it’s just straight up, “hey, rich kids, let’s earn cool kid points with overpriced limited edition footwear made by small hands in the 3rd world.’”

But, it’s not all that bad. Is it? Oh, we forgot about this t-shirt.

Beating a Dead Horse: GTA San Andreas

grand-theft-auto.jpg

My high school gym teacher talked about his high school football career and parties in Vietnam as though it was yesterday. The class politely ignored his stories because they were irrelevant and repetitive. If only we were brazen enough to peg him with a bright green paint balloon.
