“Ricky D’s in control! Of what? The hip-hop scene…” So drawled the mighty Slick Rick on his 1989 debut The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. With his beret, his eye-patch and his mock-British accent, Slick Rick was like no one else in rap. Not only did he have beats from the Bomb Squad (the production team behind Public Enemy’s greatest hits), but he was a master storyteller and peerless rhymer, able to bring all sorts of surreal characters to life in his songs. Though various scrapes with the law prevented him from fully capitalizing on his initial success, Slick Rick is still one of the most distinctive voices in the realm of hip-hop.

One of the most famous DJ’s in rap history, Kool DJ Red Alert has been showcasing new hip-hop for over 20 years—in dance clubs, on mix-tapes, and perhaps most importantly on legendary radio shows for KISS-FM, Hot 97 and Power105.1. Known for playing only the music he likes, no matter how obscure, Red Alert helped launch of the careers of the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, joined KRS-One’s Boogie Down Productions, and earned a place in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.
