Instant Fame in the Graff Game

sorry-for-the-drips.jpg

Advice for aspiring New York graffiti writers, from across the pond:

“If you want to be assured of immortality in the fleeting annals of graffiti, all you need to do is spray paint on the door of New York City councilman, Peter Vallone Jr.”

Hitting a billboard off the Manhattan Bridge works pretty well too.

Keying Cars For Kicks

painted-car-hood.jpg

This painted car hood, lying among the auto garages (some say ‘chop shops of dubious ownership’) on Pacific Street in Crown Heights, reminded us of a couple other projects challenging traditional attitudes towards cars. (Anyone seen the rest of this car driving around?)

Scratch.jpg

Like a good pair of jeans, the Fiat Scratch only gets better with age. It’s a prototype car coated with multiple layers of contrasting paint, so owners needn’t fear the scratch and can start attacking it with sharp objects. If you’re boring, just wait for it to happen naturally.

opposition-art-car-crash.jpg

Even cooler, is Jonathan Schipper’s slow motion car crash, “The Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle.” No movement is visible as the two are cars are crashed into one another over the course of an entire month. You’ll have to wait for the full sized piece.

The Cold Crush Brothers

Wednesday, July 26, 2006
From 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Crotona Park

http://www.cityparksfoundation.org/index1.aspx?BD=19221

This is a Free Concert. All CityParks Concerts Start at 7:00PM and are Rain or Shine.

Cold Crush Brothers were rocking their pure hip-hop on the streets of the Bronx years before multi-member rap groups caught the attention of the world.

With peers like Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One, CCB spearheaded the coming together of dance, beats, scratching and storytelling that would galvanize African-American culture and, eventually, the rest of the world. Classic tracks like “The Weekend” and “Fresh, Wild, Fly And Bold,” stand as evidence of CCB’s musical prowess. The group’s talent and dedication to true hip-hop remains undiminished.

High Writer

You could duct tape a spray can to a broomstick, with a door hinge and a piece of string, or buy the High Writer when The Graffiti Research Lab auctions it off at the Benefit Art Show for Daniel McGowan on Thursday night. Besides catching 15 foot high tags, you could use this contraption to disable surveillance cameras or touch up the ceiling molding in your apartment. Follow the link for a video in action.

P.S. 64 is Under Attack

public-school-64.jpg

The Village Voice’s Power Plays reports that Greg Singer, the owner of P.S. 64 near the west end of Tompkins Square Park, has begun stripping the terra cotta facade. As Singer was awarded an alteration permit before the building was landmarked in June, he has the legal right to destroy the landmarked facade by October. With the facade removed he can go to court to overturn the building’s landmarked status.

Check out post demolition renderings from the East Village Community Coalition after the jump.
